IN anticipation of the upcoming World Environment Day next month, Tech Dome Penang (TDP) has launched a special programme called the ‘Environmental Impact Challenge 2023’.

The World Environment Day is celebrated yearly on June 5.

Environmental Impact Challenge 2023 is sponsored by Plexus Manufacturing Sdn Bhd and the office of Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy, while Tech Dome Penang is coordinating the programme with the support of the state Education Department.

TDP chief executive officer Khoo Boo Wooi said the pilot programme aims to motivate the younger generations to cultivate environmental awareness and encourage project innovation in green technology for a greener and cleaner future.

“Although this Environmental Impact Challenge 2023 is our pilot programme, we managed to garner the participation of 57 students from 10 schools across the five districts in Penang.

“The schools are SMK (L) Methodist, SMK Bukit Gambir, SMK Dato Onn, SMK Hj Mohd Nor Ahmad, SMK Jelutong, SMK Mak Mandin, SMK Permatang Rawa, SMK Raja Tun Uda, SMK St Xavier and SMK Taman Sejahtera,” Khoo said in his speech during the programme launching ceremony at TDP in Komtar on May 27.

According to Khoo, as with other Tech Dome Penang programmes, the Environmental Impact Challenge 2023 operates as a public-private partnership initiative.

“This programme is very special because our main sponsor, Plexus, not only provides funding, but also mentors the students. The mentors will share their knowledge on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and provide insights on Environmental Social Governance (ESG) based on their experiences.

“The mentor will then guide the students throughout the programme, covering topics related to environmental sustainability, such as climate change, renewable energy, recycling and others at various stages at Tech Dome Penang.

“After the students have all the knowledge required, they will work with their mentors to develop projects that can make a positive impact on the environment.

“Plexus has also provided a seed fund of up to RM100 for each of the projects. The final competition will be held on Oct 14 at Tech Dome Penang,” he said.
