TRADITIONAL media can still transform themselves despite the emergence of various social media platforms, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Chow, who was present during the annual Penang Press Club (PPC) dinner tonight, paid his tribute to the pressmen for their sacrifices in reporting reliable and accurate news.
“I believe that traditional media, such as the newspaper industry, have a role to play despite the emergence of various social media channels nowadays.
“The media have also faced a challenging time during the Covid-19 pandemic when they were one of the frontliners in bringing news to the readers.
“I sincerely value the contributions of the media,” he said in his speech at Hei Yeong Seng Chinese Restaurant in Penang Plaza, George Town.
The annual gathering dinner was jointly organised by PPC and the Journalists’ Union of North Malaya (JUNM).
The PPC and JUNM celebrated their 54th and 66th anniversary respectively during the dinner.
Chow urged everyone, especially the media, to be vigilant with the increase in Covid-19 cases recently.
He later entertained the attendees by singing two melodious songs, the second was a duet with PPC chairman Tan Hu Chuan.
Tan had earlier in his speech thanked Chow for his presence despite having a hectic schedule.
“A special gratitude to all the PPC committee for their unwavering effort in realising tonight’s dinner, and I hope everyone here can take precautionary measures given the rise in Covid-19 cases,” he said.
Media practitioners present were treated to a sumptuous dinner and some entertainment.
Many too went home with smiles on their faces after the lucky draws.
