THE Penang contingent has been challenged to secure over 50 gold medals at the next Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Selangor in 2026.
State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi (PH-Padang Lalang) disclosed that the state, through the Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP), is committed to achieving this ambitious goal.
“Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has challenged us to convert 50% of the silver medals we won at Sukma Sarawak this year into gold for the next edition. Let us work together to reach this target in two years,” Gooi said during his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly.
In the recent Sukma in Sarawak, the Penang contingent secured 41 gold, 45 silver, and 53 bronze medals. Gooi expressed hope for an even better performance in 2026.
On the growing popularity of pickleball, Gooi noted that the state currently has no plans or funding to build dedicated courts.
“We prioritise constructing multi-purpose venues that can accommodate various sports,” he said.
On the health front, Gooi highlighted the formation of a mental health committee to address rising cases of depression and suicidal tendencies.
“This committee, headed by me and supported by the state Health Department and other stakeholders, aims to bring the mental health issues to the forefront. We encourage the public to seek assistance when needed,” he added.
