FOR decades, Datuk Lee Wing Kong was the pillar of success, transforming his family business into a well-known importer of various paraphernalia items.
Lee, who passed away at the age of 72 on Monday, was a true champion of George Town’s cultural heritage and a constant supporter of the George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI).
His passing was sorely missed, with leaders of Chinese associations, community leaders, and Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow expressing their sorrow.
During his visit to Lee’s wake at Jalan Pintal Tali in George Town this evening, Chow paid tribute to Lee’s passion and unwavering dedication to the community.
“When I met him around 20 years ago, Lee was already a well-respected community leader, and I am privileged to have known him,” Chow told reporters at the wake service.
“Lee helped me connect with other association leaders, as he was influential among them at that time. We respected each other, and he was a knowledgeable community figure, well-versed in current affairs.”
Chow highlighted that Lee’s contributions to the community were invaluable, noting his culinary skills and his love for sharing his knowledge.
“Lee was jovial, warm, and always willing to share his knowledge with others. He was also a caring figure in the community,” Chow added.
Lee’s funeral will be held tomorrow (Nov 29), with the cortege departing for burial at Mount Erskine burial ground at 2 pm.
Others present to pay their last respects were state Social Development, Welfare and Non-Religious Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim, Pulau Tikus assemblyman Joshua Woo, Sungai Puyu assemblyman Phee Syn Tze, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan, and Tanjong parliamentary representatives.
