THE essential workers, who have been working relentlessly to upkeep Penang Hill, have reason to smile now that Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) has successfully restored two dilapidated dormitories to a better living environment for them.
Surrounded by lush greenery and serene living environment, the restored dormitories are located at the lower tunnel station.
PHC general manager Datuk Cheok Lay Leng said the workers’ welfare was always prioritised.
“In fact, they can be considered as lucky to have the chance to stay at these two dormitories because this site has its long historical values.
“Previously, the two dormitories were used by the staff members building the railway back in 1915.
“Since then, they have been left empty until PHC decided to refurbish the two quarters for its workers.
“The refurbishment works started in August last year and took four months to complete. The cost of the project is about RM450,000.
“Other works such as repair of damaged roof and slope stability were also carried out,” he said after handing over a mock key to a group of workers at the newly refurbished quarters in lower tunnel station of the hill.
These workers are considered the backbone of the hill resort for m
aintaining its cleanliness, conducting maintenance works and landscaping works to make Penang Hill one of the top tourist spots in Malaysia.
Cheok also expressed his gratitude to the state government for prioritising the workers’ welfare.
The 22 workers, who are housed in two quarters nearby the restored dormitories, can move in to their new living place starting tomorrow.
