TWO STEM-related programmes – a free Python Workshop and a Japanese Mathematics Class – will be organised for the Pengkalan Kota community next month.
Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng thanked the collaborative partners, including Penang Math Platform, JBPP Pengkalan Kota, Junior Chamber International (JCI) Penang and Aimsity Sdn Bhd for their efforts in stimulating interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) among the young in Penang.
“We believe that by investing in STEM education, we are paving the way for a brighter future for our youth,” Wong said during a press conference on ‘Free Experience Class Python Kadun Pengkalan Kota’ at JCI Penang Harbour Trade Centre in Gat Lebuh Macallum today.
PMP general manager Johnny Ong emphasised the importance of keeping pace with technological advances as we enter the Digital Age.
“We should acquaint ourselves with jargon like AI (artificial intelligence), Cloud Computing, VR (virtual reality), AR (augmented reality), Big Data, Cyber Security, etc.
“With the support of YB Wong Yuee Harng and others, we will equip our young for the future.
“Also, a big shout-out to JCI Penang for being the venue sponsor for our events.
“The state government is committed to driving the development and economic growth of Penang through STEM-based initiatives to support all the industry players that have set up operations in Penang,” Ong said.
The Python workshop is scheduled to take place on April 21 (Sunday) at JCI Penang for two hours, from 9.30am to 11.30am.
Thirty slots are available for the workshop where parents will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on coding activities with their teenage children (ages 11 to 17).

The Japanese Mathematics Class is a weekly class that will be held every Saturday at JCI Penang, starting from April 20 this year to Jan 11, 2025 (except on public holidays and school holidays).
Dr Cheah Ui Hock, a former deputy director of RECSAM, has played a pivotal role in promoting the class for young people in Penang, collaborating with various stakeholders to nurture curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
The programme, to be taught in English, is designed for six-year-old children, with a one-time registration fee of RM50. It aims to cultivate a passion for mathematics among the young.
There is no monthly fee. The registration link: https://forms.gle/KRjhxejBYNaLsSJz7
JCI Penang chief executive officer Zeon Cheong extended a warm invitation to youths interested in contributing to JCI Penang’s initiatives.
“We welcome any young individuals who are passionate about making a difference in our community to join us,” Cheong said.
Also present at the event were Aimsity Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Jaylee Ong and Penang Youth Committee (Pengkalan Kota) officer Willy Ong.
