THE replacement of the two leaking 1,200mm control valves at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant is nearing completion, with one valve already finished and the other at 95% (at the time of writing).
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow expressed gratitude for the hardworking workers and highlighted the significance of replacing a valve from 1973.
“As you can see, one of the old valves was from France and it was installed back in 1973.
“The old valve, in service for over 50 years without replacement, has played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth transmission of water from the treatment plant to households in the state. We appreciate its enduring contribution to the water distribution system,” he said during his visit to the Sungai Dua WTP today (Jan 10).
Chow also extended the state’s gratitude to the diligent workers who have tirelessly carried out the repair process.
“Their hard work and dedication are truly commendable.
Once the replacement of the valves is completed, the Sungai Dua WTP will treat raw water from Sungai Muda and Mengkuang Dam, gradually restoring water supply to households based on a schedule.
Chow underscored that the operation is deemed complete only when water is fully restored to normal in every household.
Furthermore, he mentioned the intention to reroute water-filled lorry tankers to different areas once the situation in that specific location stabilises.
Also present were state Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, state Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, Bukit Tengah assemblyman Gooi Hsiao-Leung, and Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) chief executive officer K. Pathmanathan.
