Vital to engage with voters, says Chow

ENGAGEMENT with the voters in each constituency in Penang is needed leading to the state polls on Aug 12, caretaker Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said.

As the campaigning entered the fourth day today, Chow and his party’s staff and volunteers have conducted a series of walkabouts in a few constituencies following the nomination day on July 29.

They were often well-received by the people during the walkabout sessions.

“The bonding with the constituents is key for us to understand them better, especially during such sessions.

“The physical interaction with the voters plays a vital factor for us in getting to know the local issues affecting them.

“Although virtual sessions have become a new norm in parts of our daily lives, physical bonding is still necessary with the people,” he told reporters after his walkabout session at Perkampungan Juru Market this morning.

When asked by a reporter on a small-scale of crowd spotted during the Unity candidates’ ceramah event, Chow said most of them have been following it virtually.

“The ceramah was broadcast live on social media, and some of them preferred to watch it online,” he said.

On the response received from the Malay seats so far, Chow said the component parties in the unity government would provide an assessment.

“So far, everything is still at an early stage, and we need to bring out our unity government’s message to the people. We will continue our pledge to bring more development to the state,” he said.

Chow emphasised that each party in the unity government plays a pivotal role in the campaigning.

PKR Bukit Tengah’s candidate Gooi Hsiao Leung was present alongside Chow during the walkabout.

Gooi told the media that he noticed the youths were more receptive towards Unity candidates.

“In Penang, 25% of the voters are youths aged from 18 to 30. Our social media platforms have also been strengthened to attract them,” he said.
