ONE of the vibrant and exciting celebrations in Penang, Wesak Day, will finally see devotees making their return to temples this year after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

What makes this year’s celebration even more special is that it is the 60th year since Wesak Day became a national public holiday in Malaysia.

The theme for this year is “promote harmony through mutual respect and helping each other”.

During an interview session with Buletin Mutiara today, the Malaysian Buddhist Association (MBA) honorary secretary Venerable Ji Zun said this year, devotees are given the green light to participate in the ritual of bathing the Buddha statue at the MBA building in Burmah Road.

“Although they are allowed to do so, we strongly encourage the devotees to have their face masks on at all times.

“We will have our volunteers on site to remind the people to strictly follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“Meanwhile, we will also provide gloves if at all the devotees want to use them,” she said.

Meanwhile, it was learned that three Buddha statues will be made available to avoid overcrowding.

Relatively, she said the bathing of the Buddha statue will happen from 7.30pm to 10pm on Saturday and 6am to 10pm on Sunday.

“Devotees can participate during the said timings,” she added.

There will also be an exhibition featuring photos of previous Wesak Day celebrations at the MBA building on both days.

“Unfortunately, there won’t be any procession this year. This is for the safety of everyone,” she said.

Ji also said there would be two major events happening during this year’s Wesak Day celebrations.

“One is when we will be having a live broadcast to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Wesak Day as a national public holiday in Malaysia on Saturday at 4pm.

“The other event, which is open to the public, will be the official celebration ceremony at the MBA building on Sunday at 9am.

“Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow is expected to grace the ceremony,” she said.
