THE ‘Watch You’ CCTV programme, an initiative by Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP), has yielded positive results in curbing littering issues on the mainland.
It was reported earlier that a total of 16 hotspots in the Seberang Perai neighbourhood were identified for the installation of ‘Watch You’ CCTVs.
MBSP Urban Services Department director Ahmad Zabri Mohamed Sarajudin, when contacted by the Buletin Mutiara team today, said in some areas the practice of waste disposal outside the communal bin has stopped.
“With the installation of these CCTVs, people have stopped disposing rubbish outside the communal bins at Taman Widuri and Pekan Penaga.
“We recently had installed the ‘Watch You’ CCTV at Kubang Semang and a total of 25 compounds were issued so far,” Ahmad Zabri said.
MBSP collaborates with Happy Icon Sdn Bhd, a technology-based company, to implement the ‘Watch You’ CCTV programme.
It is learned that earlier this year on Feb 9, Watch You CCTVs were installed at four areas, namely Taman Widuri, Kampung Kepala Gajah, Taman Cendana Permai and Pekan Penaga.
These CCTVs are equipped with an artificial intelligence (AI) applications capable of recognising vehicle registration numbers and even facial recognition to identify and penalise offenders.
MBSP currently has 1,039 communal bins located all over Seberang Perai.
Throwing industrial or commercial solid waste in MBSP communal bins and littering is considered an offence, which can lead to fines of up to RM2,000.
