WESLEY Methodist School Penang (International) (WMSPI) is set to present its second annual ‘Harmony of Hope’ Christmas Concert on Dec 7 from 7pm to 9.30pm at the school’s multipurpose hall. This vibrant event will feature performances from students across Secondary, Primary, and Early Years, each demonstrating their musical talents while committing to a meaningful mission of community service.

This year’s concert aims to raise funds for two notable local organisations: House of Hope and Charis Hospice, with WMSPI senior principal Lau Chong Beng highlighting the importance of community support.

“These organisations are dedicated to supporting those in need, and the funds raised will help them continue their vital work,” Lau stated. He further explained, “The Harmony of Hope Christmas Concert is not just a showcase of our students’ talents but also reflects our core values of faith, hope, love, and service.”

Lau emphasised the dual purpose of the concert: “This event is our collective act of love and faith, shining the light of Christ’s message on those facing life’s greatest challenges. Through the concerted efforts of Charis Hospice and House of Hope, we aim to provide essential care and comfort to the most vulnerable — the poor, the ill, and the marginalised.”

The event also reflects the school’s commitment to instilling values of compassion and service among its students, with Vice-Principal Susan Tang, Registrar June Lo, and Marketing Manager Peter Loo also supporting these initiatives.

WMSPI has set a fundraising target of RM150,000 for the event, themed “Illuminating Lives Through Faith, Hope, and Love.” Lau recalled the success of last year’s inaugural concert, notably attended by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and his wife, Tan Lean Kee, whose presence significantly contributed to the event’s impact.

Lau emphasises the importance of character building over solely academic excellence.

Lau also shared insights about the instrumental role of House of Hope, “When I was principal at Methodist Boys School, I saw firsthand how House of Hope supports students with meals, school supplies, and uniforms, reflecting their philosophy of giving back to the community.”

Charis Hospice, known for providing compassionate palliative care, is also a key beneficiary. “The Penang community deeply values the services provided by Charis Hospice and House of Hope, which is why we continue to support their critical work,” Lau added.

Highlighting the broader educational mission, Lau noted, “Our school aims to make this Christmas season meaningful by focusing on the true spirit of Christmas — giving hope and sharing love. For patients under Charis Hospice’s care, maintaining hope is crucial for living with dignity until the end.”

He also noted the alignment of this initiative with the Penang2030 Vision, promoting a caring and inclusive society. The proactive involvement of student groups in community service initiatives, such as the Boys Brigade and Board of Monitors, who have organised food distributions and fundraising sales, was also highlighted.

WMSPI, an international school under the Methodist Council of Education, offers the Cambridge curriculum from Early Years to Secondary education.

Susan Tang emphasised the enthusiasm of students, particularly through the Shoebox initiative, where students have filled over 20 shoeboxes with essentials and gifts for those in need, demonstrating their commitment to helping the community.

“We are committed to nurturing students who excel not only academically but also in character, embodying humility and service, which are key aspects of the Methodist education legacy,” Lau remarked, expressing gratitude for the strong support from students’ parents, school staff, and local churches in promoting the concert.

Reflecting on the initiative’s success, now in its second year, Lau hopes it will become an annual tradition, noting, “Many of our students, even as young as six, have shown extraordinary generosity — using their pocket money to buy tickets and support fundraising efforts. Everyone contributes in their own small ways.”
