THE 2019 theme for the International Women’s Day (IWD) is ‘Balance for Better’ with the movement hoping that strong efforts are made to accelerate gender parity.

In Penang, the state government has recently established the Women and Family Development Committee (JPWK) in every constituency.

“JPWK is the first of its kind and no other states in Malaysia have done this before. Penang leads again,” state executive councillor Chong Eng said at the Penang Women Chamber of Commerce (PWCC) Chinese New Year and installation luncheon at Flamingo Hotel in Tanjung Bungah today.

Chong Eng, who is also the PWCC adviser, added that the achievements of women have definitely played a role in bridging the gender gap closer.

“PWCC has also stepped up to the call to participate in this year’s International Women’s Day by organising their very first full-day conference entitled, ‘Inspiring Future Leaders’, at G-Hotel ballroom on March 30,” she said.

Also present were Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow’s wife Tan Lean Kee, PWCC vice-president Kristine Leong and secretary Genny Tse.

The conference, which is expected to be packed, will have renowned speakers such as former International Trade and Industry minister Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, and Hunza Properties executive director Khor Tze Ming.
