Women must stand up for themselves, says Chong Eng

ALL women in the society must step forward and stand up for their respective rights, says state Women and Family Development, Gender Inclusiveness and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Chong Eng.

She said the women community must be vocal and able to express their rights freely to ensure their they are protected.

When talking about Village Community Management Council (MPKK), she said the aim was to see 30 percent of women appointed to the committee by 2021.

“It is important to see women’s progress,” Chong Eng said during her speech after attending the International Women’s Day 2019 celebration at Autocity, Juru, today.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow is also supportive towards Chong Eng’s call for women to rise up.

He said women must be outspoken and stand up for themselves.

“We (state) will always support and make sure women’s rights be taken care of,” said Chow.

The celebration, which was organised by Batu Kawan parliamentary constituency under its assemblyman P. Kasthuri, was attended by many women clad in purple T-shirts.

Also present were Chow’s wife Tan Lean Kee, Kasthuri, Bukit Tengah assemblyman Gooi Hsiao Leung and Berapit assemblyman Heng Lee Lee.

Kasthuri also concurred with Chow and Chong Eng, saying women must play their part in society as well.

“Many view female as a ‘second class citizen’ which is something not right,” she said.

Gooi, meanwhile, was also in full praise for Kasthuri for being vocal on female rights in Parliament, adding that the latter had been consistently championing women’s rights.
