HUNDREDS of yoga enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds and races participated in the Penang International Yoga Day celebration at Taman Bandaraya (formerly called Youth Park) today.
Organised by the Malaysia Hindhudharma Maamandram Penang branch, this annual event has been taking place since 2018.
The event, which was officiated by the state Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee, also featured a two-hour yoga session. It was led by experienced yoga instructors, starting at 6.30am.
Malaysia Hindhudharma Maamandram Penang branch chairman Thanabalan Nanda Kumar said he was happy to see an increased participation compared to last year.
“Last year, we managed to record an attendance of 250 participants but this year we have some 400 participants.
“I would like to thank them for their continued support of yoga.
“Our association will continue to organise events like this to promote the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of yoga.
“After all, yoga practices are also beneficial for our health and have proven to be effective in combating a stressful lifestyle,” Thanabalan said in his speech today.
Soon also commended the Malaysia Hindhudharma Maamandram Penang branch for conducting such an event to promote yoga in the state.
“I hope more associations will come forward to organise more yoga programmes in Penang as yoga is suitable for everyone regardless of age.
“Such event is also in line with the state vision for Penang2030, which promotes active living and aims to build stronger communities by creating opportunities for people from all walks of life to come together and engage in physical activity.
“This can lead to increased social connections, improved mental health, and overall well-being,” he said.
