THE young generation especially university students should avoid engaging in any criminal activities that would cause harm to themselves and others around them, says Batu Uban assemblyman Kumaresan Arumugam.

Speaking at the crime prevention programme at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Gelugor on October 19, he emphasised the long-term consequences of engaging in crime.

Kumaresan also highlighted the importance of maintaining a good personal and professional reputation in today’s digital era, where information spreads quickly.

He pointed out that having a criminal record can severely restrict career prospects.

“A criminal record can limit future opportunities, as many employers and institutions now conduct thorough background checks. Criminal behaviour can lead to disqualification from jobs and internships,” he said.

Kumaresan also highlighted the importance of maintaining a good personal and professional reputation in today’s digital era, where information spreads quickly.

“Engaging in crime can tarnish a student’s image, which may follow them for life,” he added.

The programme, titled ‘Mahasiswa Madani Mencegah Jenayah, Rasuah, Siber Scam dan Ancaman Dadah’, was organised by the Persatuan Kebajikan Rakyat in collaboration with the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF).

It saw participation from 300 USM students, who were educated on crime prevention by representatives from the Royal Malaysia Police’s (PDRM) Commercial Crime Department.

Kumaresan also cautioned students about the dangers of social media scams, advising them to remain vigilant.

“Avoid becoming a victim of scam crimes. Never transfer money to strangers or allow third parties to use your account as a mule accounts,” he warned.

The programme was also attended by Penang MCPF chairman Datuk Seri Ong Poh Eng, who echoed the call for greater awareness and proactive prevention among the youth.
